Pool Sand FiltersSand Filters are the most commonly used filters for cleaning swimming pools, because of the ease of backwashing or cleaning the filter. In this method, impurities are extracted from the water utilizing sand to collect and attract the debris. Sand filters must be backwashed (running it in reverse) to unload the water waste. This is a manual process that must be performed every few weeks. Sand filters trap debris as small as 20 to 40 microns. Zeo-Brite has now become avaliable in Canada which can be used in a sand filter. Zeo-Brite filters out particles from 3-5 microns in size, resulting in a cleaner pool. Pool Cartridge FiltersCartridge filters have a greater surface area than sand filters and are designed to run at lower pressure which puts less backpressure on the pump, providing more flow and turnover. Cartridge filters should be cleaned at least once or twice a season, by simply hosing them off. Depending on bather load and condition of water it may be necessary to clean and rinse them on a more regular basis. Cartridge element filters trap debris as small as 15 to 20 microns. |

D.E. Pool FiltersDiatomaceous earth is mined and is the fossilized exoskeletons of tiny diatoms. They are used to coat "grids" in the filter housing and act as tiny sieves allowing for the removal of debris as small as 5 microns. Once the pressure rises, the filter is backwashed just like a sand filter and then "recharged" with more DE powder. DE filters trap debris as small as 2 - 5 microns. |

Zeobrite®Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral formed millions of years ago.Viewed under an electron microscope, the granules reveal void spaces as small as 3 microns. Small particles of clay and silt suspended in water are trapped in the void spaces. Molecular sieving occurs when water contaminants such as ammonia and chloramines are adsorbed and chemically locked onto the zeolite granules.The combination of physical entrapment of fine particles and molecular sieving of contaminants makes zeolite a superb water filtration media and produces superior water clarity compared to regular sand media.
